Bitstamp Blocked for Russian Users

Bitstamp’s administration announced it had temporarily blocked access to all users from Russia.

According to Bitstamp, Russian regulators started restricting access to their exchange for Russian citizens on the background of continuing preparation of draft laws banning bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies.

“We have not been officially notified of the reason for this action, which we view as unjustified. We are not aware of any misuse of our services involving any Russian customer. Bitstamp poses no threat to the security of Russia or its economy,” the exchange’s official notice reads.

The exchange also points out that currently they are trying to contact Russian regulators to clarify the true reasons for restricting access to their site.

In order to avoid contradictions with the Russian government’s decision, as well as to protect its users and partners, Bitstamp opted to temporarily restrict access to their website for Russia-based IP’s. The measure will remain in force until the matters clarify.

Currently, when attempting to visit the site with a Russian IP, it returns a message referencing some security rules as the reason for the restriction.
